Detroit Auto Show: 2012 Audi A6

Audi has unveiled its mid-range 2012 A6 sedan, and as we learned from advanced photos, it follows closely in the mold of its big brother, the A8. As the range-topping sedan is a pretty piece, that's not a bad thing, but Audi seems to be channeling BMW's old "One sausage, three sizes" design mantra of decades ago. In this case, that means a massive single-frame grille, available LED headlamps (as shown), and a relatively simple and unadorned profile that lends the A6 a premium look that will likely wear well over the years. The new A6 will be available globally with two gas engines and three TDI diesel powerplants, as well as a front-wheel drive-only hybrid model. The most powerful gasoline-fed model will be the 3.0-liter TFSI Quattro, packing 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, routed through a seven-speed S tronic automatic. No word yet on U.S. availability or pricing, but we'll have more news on the hybrid model shortly, so stay tuned. While you're waiting, check out our high-res gallery below and the official press release after the jump. [Source: Audi] Continue reading Detroit 2011: 2012 Audi A6 is predictably handsome

Audi R18 Le Mans prototype

Right on schedule, Audi has pulled the sheets off its next-generation Le Mans prototype. As had been rumored before the unveil, the R18 has abandoned the open-top design of its forefathers - the R8, R10 and R15 Plus - for a closed canopy to improve aerodynamics and reduce driver fatigue. The company hasn't worked with a clamshell since 1999, and we're guessing is has more than a little to do with Peugeot's 2009 Le Mans win. That victory is the only wrinkle in the Audi's domination of the world's most difficult motorsports race, and it's no small coincidence that work on the R18 began in mid 2009. The R18 gets its grunt from a 3.7-liter TDI V6 engine, and while Audi isn't saying exactly how much horsepower or torque the oil-burner produces, we have to guess that the figures are nothing to sneeze at. Behind the engine is a new six-speed transmission, though the innovations aren't simply chained to the drivetrain. Audi used a single-piece construction carbon fiber monocoque to keep weight down and increase stiffness, and those epic all-LED headlights are the first make their way to Le Mans. While Audi is planning to campaign a total of three R18 racers at the 2011 Le Mans race this summer, the vehicle's first appearance will be at the six hours of Spa on April 24. New Audi Quattro Concept

Thirty Years After The Original, Audi Wants To Build Another Masterpiece Audi Quattro Concept
Audi Quattro Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery
Blue and red flashing lights filling the mirror after a spirited canyon run are never welcomed. Yet this time, I've fully embraced them. Why? I'm driving down California's Pacific Coast Highway in Audi's one-of-a-kind Quattro Concept with a full police escort. In front, law enforcement is clearing the road ahead as if sweeping for mines, pushing civilian traffic off to the side. I've got another unit behind me, shooing the restless natives off my flanks. The parade is impressive, but I'm wary of the pageantry. Are the cops there to solely maintain a generous cushion around the multi-million dollar concept, or has Audi paid them to keep me from rocketing off into the sunset off with their turbocharged 190-mph sports coupe? I'm tempted to floor it and find out. Continue reading...

Officially Official: 2011 Audi RS 3 Sportback unveiled

After months of spy shots and speculation, Audi has released its official information on the RS 3 Sportback. The mean little bruiser will come to the fight with 340 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque courtesy of a turbo 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine mated to a seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission. With over 17 psi of boost breathing on the five-pot, Audi says that the RS 3 Sportback is good for a 0-60 mph run of just 4.6 seconds. As you might expect, the company's fantastic Quattro all-wheel drive system helps put all that power to the road. Down below, the hatch makes use of a four-link suspension out back and a McPherson strut design up front with plenty of hardware crafted from aluminum to keep unsprung weight as low as possible. The whole kit and caboodle sits a full inch lower than the standard S3 thanks to more aggressive coilover springs and dampers. Thus far, Audi has only confirmed the vehicle for sale in Europe, and we wouldn't hold our breath waiting for it to come to the States. It retails for a tidy 49,900 Euros in Germany, which works out to around $68,000 USD. Even accounting for The Continent's comparatively inflated vehicle prices, we're thinking that this handsome hatch won't be singing Yankee Doodle Dandy any time soon. Hit the jump for the full press blast. [Source: Audi] Continue reading Officially Official: 2011 Audi RS 3 Sportback unveiled

Stasis Engineering to Unveil 710-hp Audi R8 Spyder at SEMA Show

On October 27, 2010, in CARS, DWU, RIDES, Syndicated, by SOURCE: Car and Driver
Audi’s first-ever SEMA booth will feature an R8 5.2 Spyder massaged by Stasis Engineering. The car is officially known as the Stasis Signature Series Challenge Extreme Edition R8, and therefore has more syllables than it does cylinders. Stasis installed a Roots-type supercharger blowing 7.5 psi of boost into the V-10, reprogrammed the engine-management computer, and added a low-restriction, stainless-steel exhaust system that’s a claimed 30 pounds lighter than stock. The result is 710 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque, big increases over the 525 hp and 391 lb-ft served up by the stock 5.2-liter V-10. In addition, the Stasis R8 scores lightweight, 20-inch forged wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, and 15.4-inch-diameter front brake discs (versus 14.4 inches in stock trim). There are stiffer springs at each corner, and new anti-roll bars front and rear; the car’s DriveSelect adjustable damping system remains functional.   The company claims the modified R8 Spyder is capable of hitting 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and achieving 1.01 g of lateral grip on a skidpad. The entire kit as shown at SEMA will cost $49,990; the engine options alone will run about $10K less. If installed at one of the 50 Stasis-certified Audi dealerships across the country, it even comes with a four-year/50,000-mile warranty.
