2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster [w/videos]

On September 21, 2011, in CARS, LUXURY, RIDES, Syndicated, by SOURCE: Autoblog
How This Supercar Fares Without Its Signature Doors 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster There are several ways to get to Monte Carlo once you've landed in Nice. There's the train, a 23-minute meandering trek over and through the wooded undulations of the intervening cities that deposits you at Monte Carlo's downtown station. There's a taxi, more than 30 times the cost of a train, and it takes twice as long, but it does offer service porte à porte. Or there's Heli Air Monaco with a fleet of choppers stationed at the Nice airport. Those fine gents can get you to the Monaco heliport in eight minutes, floating past seafront redoubts and over an azure Mediterranean dotted with billions of dollars of sailing and motor yachts. Of those three modes of transport, only one is appropriate when Mercedes has invited you to Monte Carlo to drive its new SLS AMG Roadster. We offered the appropriate "Mercis" to our chopper pilot for providing a smooth ride. The SLS AMG was introduced at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The roadster was engineered alongside the coupe, but it's taken two years to remove the top for public purposes. It will take you two minutes of top-down driving to begin quoting high school poetry in homage to it: "Come with me and be my love," you'll coo, "and we will all the pleasures prove...." In past generations, she was often labeled planet Earth's favorite taxi. (Or have you always preferred the Ford Crown Victoria with the shiny black leatherette?) The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, however, has long since graduated to become a premium middle-management darling in all corners of the globe. Still, even Mercedes-Benz North America would have to admit that a mid-life and/or new model year E-Class is not generally a traffic-stopping event. This time around, however, there's more going on with Mercedes' ninth-generation contender than, say, adding a new Pipe Smoker's Package or overhead cold beverage storage-TRONIC. And while it may still not cause a road block, this mid-shelf-life version of the W212 E-Class should, at least, make everyone slow down to rubberneck a bit, because the new V6 and V8 E-Class wants to take you farther on a full tank while making more power and torque to exercise your executive privileges. Report: Aston Martin to build Maybachs?

On December 24, 2010, in CARS, LUXURY, RIDES, Syndicated, by SOURCE: Autoblog
2011 Maybach
2011 Maybach range
Aston Martin and Daimler are apparently becoming chummy right now. According to The Financial Times, the two automakers are chatting about a possible relationship centered around Daimler's super-luxe Maybach sedan. Aston Martin is reportedly looking to glean some powertrain knowledge from the German automaker (for a possible Lagonda revival?) and Daimler could use help reviving a car that few are buying.
An exotic luxury sedan crafted as a joint venture between the Brits and the Germans sounds like an intriguing concept. As a matter of fact it should sound intriguing because Bentley and Rolls-Royce figured out the formula a few years ago. Though few out there can actually afford any automobile in this category, it would be nice to see new life breathed into the Maybach nameplate. [Source: Financial Times - sub. req.]

What's more important, speed or girth? Brabus says can have your proverbial cake and eat it too with its new Widestar kit for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Upgrading on their previous offering (and sounding like a minivan), the Widestar SLS benefits from a carbon fiber body kit with a 20mm wider rear track, encompassing Brabus Monoblock F Platinum Edition wheels available in a variety of colors and finishes and coated in either Pirelli or Yokohama low-profile rubber (275/30ZR-20 front and 295/25ZR-21 rear). Brabus is also offering an electronically adjustable suspension with Bilstein shocks and Ride Control system, a titanium exhaust with quadruple tips that squeezes out an extra 10 horses, while the interior can be outfitted with a number of extras you can read all about in the press release after the jump. 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS Mercedes-Benz may have rolled out the shapely new 2012 CLS sedan at the 2010 Paris Motor Show earlier this year, but the automaker revealed it'll pull the covers off the performance tuned variant -- the 2012 CLS63 AMG -- at next week's 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS As is the case with both the new 2011 CL63 AMG and S63 AMG, the engine chosen for the CLS63 AMG belies its nameplate. It isn't a 6.3-liter engine whatsoever -- in fact, it's actually a twin-turbocharged, direct-injection 5.5-liter V-8. As you've likely heard by now, the switch to a smaller, forced-induction V-8 allows the engineers in Affalterbach to create an engine that delivers both impressive fuel economy and power. For the CLS63, however, that power is a little less than that offered in its CL- and S-Class siblings. In its base form, the CLS-spec AMG engine is rated at 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. By those numbers, the engine is 18 ponies and 74 pound-feet shy of those installed in the new CL63 and S63, although it is still 18 horsepower and 50 pound-feet more than the 6.2-liter used in the outgoing CLS63 model. Buyers wanting a little more power can, however, opt for the AMG Performance Package. A series of tweaks, largely centered around the engine controller, bumps the CLS63's output to 550 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. In contrast, S63 and CL63 cars equipped with the same package throw down 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. According to sources close to the company, the discrepancy in power -- also seen in the last iteration of the AMG-tuned CLS-Class -- is largely due to curb weight. Mercedes-Benz has yet to release finalized specifications for the CLS63, but a base CLS550 tips the scale at 4168 pounds -- roughly 300-400 pounds lighter than comparable CL- and S-Class models. We're still in the dark about what other modifications AMG has in store for the new swoopy CLS, but we wouldn't be surprised if other typical touches, including upgraded suspension components, enlarged brakes, performance-rated tires, active body control, an aggressive body kit, and premium sport seats, are part of the package. We'll know for certain come November 17, when Mercedes-Benz plans on showing the 2011 CLS63 AMG in its entirety. Stay with Motor Trend for all the latest debuts and news from the Los Angeles show floor. Source: Mercedes-Benz
